France Stands Firm: Supports Morocco's Sovereignty Over Sahara – French FM

Paris, April 03 - French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot reaffirmed France's stance, as stated by top governmental officials, backing Morocco's authority over its Sahara region.

"Just a few months back, we clarified our stance: the current state and future prospects of Western Sahara lie within the realm of Moroccan sovereignty, which stems directly from Morocco’s autonomy proposal," Barrot said at a hearing with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly on Wednesday.

There are currently no other practical or believable alternatives," he highlighted, underscoring that this is integral to "achieving a permanent and mutually agreeable political resolution under the auspices of the United Nations, and we back the UN’s initiatives toward facilitating this discussion.

Barrot emphasized that he would get the chance "to talk about this with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in Paris in a few days."

In July 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron conveyed his position to King Mohammed VI of Morocco through a message, stating that "France believes that both the current state and future of Western Sahara should be considered within the scope of Moroccan sovereignty."

Macron reiterated "France's steadfast stance on this matter concerning the national security of the Kingdom" and stated that his nation "will act consistently with this standpoint, whether domestically or abroad."

During his official visit to the country, Macron reiterated this stance in a landmark speech delivered at the Moroccan Parliament on October 29.

"I reaffirm this today in front of you. For France, the current state and future of this region are tied to Morocco’s sovereignty. The framework for resolving this issue must include autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty," emphasized the President of France.
