Protest Erupts: Demonstrators Storm Education Ministry, Call for FUOYE VC's Suspension Over Sexual Harassment Claims
On Thursday, numerous demonstrators broke into the main offices of the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja. They were demonstrating against Professor Abayomi Fasina remaining in his position as the Vice-Chancellor at Federal University, Oye-Ekiti.
The demonstrators, bearing slogans like "Ekiti deserves better" and " Protect our women," contended that the VC should not remain in his position while facing accusations of sexual harassment.
The beleaguered vice chancellor has faced scrutiny at the 13-year-old university following accusations detailed in a leaked audio clip involving alleged sexual harassment by one of his wedded junior employees.
After presenting a petition to Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, Victor Adetola, who leads the protestors under the banner of the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations Against Corruption, told reporters that removing the Vice Chancellor from office would allow for comprehensive inquiries into the issue at hand.
Adetola stated, "We have examined the evolving situation taking place at that university, considering our organization’s role in advocating for the well-being of Nigerian students and the broader educational community."
“The issue will be festering if there are no thorough investigations, and we need that place to be sanitized. Honestly, currently, there is a disciplinary action investigation that is going on that was first given a three-week ultimatum.
Following this, they asked for an additional three-week deadline, which included the governing council. Over the last six months, no action has been taken. This situation has led to many issues going unaddressed and significant corruption persisting.
Indeed, one of the most serious problems occurring is the sexual harassment experienced by an married assistant director at that school.
Specifically, either the head of the university must resign initially, or the governing council should require them to relinquish their position so that an impartial investigation can be conducted into all the petitions we have submitted.
We submitted this to the Ministry of Education today, and other relevant agencies will also receive copies. This way, future generations can grow up in an environment and society that we know is fair and equal.
