Lagos Set to Host Energy Summit: Pioneering Solutions for Sustainable Power
The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has unveiled plans for the first-ever Lagos Energy Summit, aimed at promoting sustainable power solutions.
The 'Journey to Energy for All' summit is designed to encourage dynamic dialogues via stakeholder interactions, offering cutting-edge solutions for enhancing the state’s energy industry.
The summit is scheduled to occur between April 15th and 18th at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos.
During a press conference on Thursday, Commissioner Biodun Ogunleye, who oversees Energy and Mineral Resources, stated that the upcoming summit is an essential move towards realizing the ambition of providing every resident of Lagos with accessible and sustainable energy sources.
"The purpose of this summit extends beyond mere discussion—it’s all about taking action. We aim to gather key players from industries, government officials, financial backers, and creators who will work towards generating practical answers to the energy issues faced by Lagos," he stated.
Ogunleye highlighted the summit’s key objectives, which include promoting sustainable energy solutions, advancing renewable energy adoption, and facilitating high-level stakeholder engagement.
He mentioned that the event will similarly emphasize the newly implemented Lagos State Electricity Law 2024, granting the state authority to regulate power generation and distribution.
The commissioner stated that the summit will offer an opportunity to display cutting-edge energy technologies, create practical plans, and verify execution strategies for renewable energy initiatives.
He mentioned that the Lagos Energy Summit aims to attract a wide range of attendees such as energy experts, government representatives, private sector financiers, research bodies, environmental activists, global organizations, and local residents.
He pointed out that financial institutions and tech companies are anticipated to have a substantial part in funding and implementing eco-friendly energy projects.
The commissioner stated that the state government has acknowledged for a long time the necessity of restructuring its energy sector to align with its vision of a 24-hour economy.
“Historically, the state has faced persistent power supply challenges, prompting initiatives such as the Enron IPP project under former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who, as Nigeria’s current president, signed the Electricity Act 2023, allowing subnational governments to regulate their own power sectors,” he recalled.
Ogunleye reiterated that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is committed to policy development, capacity building, community engagement, research, partnerships, and regulatory oversight to ensure the state’s energy goals are met.
“Lagos is not just Nigeria’s economic nerve centre; it is a trailblazer in energy sector transformation. Together, we will ensure that our journey to Energy for All is a reality, fostering sustainable growth and prosperity for all Lagosians,” he added.
