GSMA Board Elevates MTN CEO to Deputy Chair Role

The GSMA, a leading international body in the field of telecommunications, has named MTN Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Ralph Mupita, as the deputy chairperson of its board.

He will retain his position on the board throughout the rest of the term, which concludes in 2026. His role will involve assisting the chairman and the board in supervising the organization’s strategic course.

"This selection is a significant honor because it occurs during a period of swift advancements in technology and growing digital uptake throughout Africa," states Mupita.

Cellular technology will be essential in tackling the urgent issues confronting our societies and in realizing the complete potential of Africa and the remaining parts of the Global South, guaranteeing that nobody gets left behind as we move towards a more interconnected future.

He emphasized his commitment to backing the GSMA’s strategic vision, noting that the organization is essential for advocating the interests of the worldwide mobile industry.

"Collectively, we will keep pushing for innovation and positive transformation within the sector," stated Mupita.

The GMSA’s Director General, Vivek Badrinath, congratulated Mupita on his election for the role.

"His expertise will be incredibly valuable as we keep navigating the ever-changing environment of our sector. I am eager to collaborate closely with him and the board," stated Badrinath.

Mupita has been the President and CEO of MTN Group since September 2020, before which he served as the company’s CFO from April 2017.

Prior to his role at MTN, Mupita served as the CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets. He has earned both a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Engineering and an MBA from the University of Cape Town.

He has likewise finished the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.
