Run for Charity: Treadmill Marathon Success!
|
Even though he reached his objective, he previously experienced such extreme side effects that he lost consciousness.
Joe Pritchard, aged 23 from Worcestershire, England, set himself the challenge of running non-stop for 24 hours to support the 'My Name Doddie Foundation', as reported by the BBC and various international news outlets.
The foundation is a charity founded by Scottish rugby player Doddie Weir, who died of motor neurone disease at the age of 52.
Pritchard got on a treadmill placed inside a pub in Shroley, Worcestershire, and began jogging.
He ran a total of 167 kilometers without resting except for the time to go to the bathroom for 24 hours. After achieving the milestone despite his nosebleed, he also briefly lost consciousness after getting off the treadmill.
Afterwards, he said "My father and brother were carrying, and I felt dizzy and nauseated"
Luckily, I felt better after soaking in a hot bath.
As for his fundraising efforts at the bar, he said "Because I thought the drinking customers would be willing to donate their change."
He mentioned that initially, he planned to use the treadmill for an entire week. However, after considering the discouragement from those around him, he decided to change his plans within 24 hours.
He raised 1,700 pounds (about 3.2 million won) at the bar and more than 4,500 pounds (about 8.5 million won) online.
"I'm surprised and happy that I've been able to raise so much money," he says "this is why I've tortured myself for 24 hours."
In the meantime, some internet users responded with comments like “Why not seek medical help?” Others expressed sentiments along the lines of ‘It’s counterproductive to encourage harmful behavior under the guise of goodwill’ and ‘Intense physical activity over a brief duration can lead to rhabdomyolysis.’
Rhabdomyolysis is a disease in which muscle cells are destroyed or necrotic due to sudden and intense physical activity, causing insufficient energy and oxygen to be supplied to the muscles (rhabdomyo). Sudden muscle pain and dark red (cola) urine symptoms may appear, and in severe cases, systemic symptoms such as fever, vomiting, general weakness, and swelling may be accompanied, or acute renal failure may occur due to sudden deterioration of kidney function. In serious cases, it can be life-threatening.
